Rental, not rail, to Dulles

Posted on Tuesday 18 December 2007

In my neck of the woods, there are plans afoot to extend Metro Rail to Dulles International Airport. It’s a 23-mile, multi-billion dollar project that won’t be fully finished until at least 2015.

Meanwhile, some friends of mine had a better idea for their holiday travel. They live in Alexandria and need to catch a flight to California tomorrow for a ten-day trip. Traditional options:

  1. Drive their own car and park in Economy Parking: $9 x 10 days=$90.
  2. Take a taxi or van service =$100+ round trip.

Their alternative: Rent a car from National Airport, drive it to Dulles, and return the car. When returning from California, they will rent another car and return it to National. The cost of two days of rental: $60.

A brilliant idea. While its a bit of a hassle renting and returning the cars twice, its easier than escorting two children under the age of 4 on public transit or the unreliable Economy Parking Lot shuttles. The rental car shuttles at Dulles, they say, tend to be more reliable.
