Traffic crisis averted

Posted on Thursday 26 July 2007

Phew:

The U.S. Army has agreed to dramatically scale back plans to move 22,000 jobs to Fort Belvoir in southeastern Fairfax County, averting a widely predicted traffic catastrophe and eliminating pressure on state and local officials to spend nearly $500 million in road and transit improvements.

According to an agreement negotiated with Virginia, the Army will cap at 8,500 the number of jobs it will move from the Pentagon and Crystal City to Belvoir’s isolated Engineering Proving Ground. That number was set at 18,500 in 2005, when the Army and Congress orchestrated a series of base closures and realignments to cut spending and comply with guidelines for more secure military operations established following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Sounds like someone at the Army finally bought a clue. I live near this base, so this is a relief. On the other hand, my home may not appreciate quite so quickly.
